Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson is facing backlash for comments she made about UConn Huskies star point guard Paige Bueckers. A video surfaced of A'ja Wilson commenting on Paige Bueckers' "privilege" while attending UConn's Final Four matchup versus Iowa last season.
In the video, Wilson compared Bueckers to her teammate Kelsey Plum, and indicated that she felt the UConn star's "privilege pushes her over the top."
"Us as black women, [Paige Bueckers] reminds me a lot of [Kelsey Plum]. Like, you say, 'It's not really about me', she knows. And she knows how her privilege has gotten her to that point. And, also, like, she's good at basketball, obviously. She understands her privilege. It's like what pushes her over the top in a sense. It reminds me a lot of you. And I mean that as a compliment."
However, CBS analyst and broadcaster, Chris Williamson, defended the three-time WNBA MVP.
"The way so many Black men on here try to humble and tear [A'ja Wilson] down on here makes me want to vomit," Williamson posted to X.
A'ja Wilson won her third WNBA MVP on Sep. 22, earning the first unanimous vote since the Houston Comets’ Cynthia Cooper in 1997.
A'ja Wilson, Aces fall behind 2-0 versus Liberty
A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces dropped their second game in the WNBA playoff semifinals, going down 2-0 versus the New York Liberty. The Liberty topped the Aces 88-84 after dropping Game 1 87-77.
The reigning MVP scored 24 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists in Game 2. Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu scored 24 points, tying Wilson for the game-high, with 11 points in the fourth quarter.
Breanna Stewart added 15 points and eight rebounds for New York, which is now just one game away from the WNBA Finals.
The Aces will host the Liberty for Games 3 and 4 as they look to come back from a 2-0 deficit.
The reigning back-to-back WNBA champions have their backs against the wall entering Game 3.
