Chicago Sky guard Marina Mabrey is heading to the Connecticut Sun following a major trade in the WNBA Wednesday. The Sky are also giving up a second-round pick for two players and draft capital.
The Sun will send 31-year-old guard Rachel Banham and 30-year-old guard Moriah Jefferson.
Banham is scoring 4.9 points per game this year, while Jefferson has averaged just 2.1 points in under seven minutes of action per game this season. They're also giving up next year's first-round pick for Mabrey.
The trade also includes a draft swap for 2026, meaning in two offseasons, the Sky can move up in the first round of the WNBA draft if the Sun's pick is more attractive.
Mabrey is averaging 14 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the Chicago Sky this year. She's scored over 15 points in three straight games and almost netted a triple-double against the New York Liberty on July 13 with a 21-point, 12-rebound and 7-assist performance.
Chicago Sky General Manager Jeff Pagliocca thanked Mabrey for her time in Chicago in a public statement alongside the trade news.
"Marina has made a significant impact over the past two seasons with the Sky behind her scoring ability, playmaking, competitiveness and commitment to the community," he said in a statement. "We appreciate all of her contributions to the organization and wish her continued success in the league."
Marina Mabrey leaving Chicago Sky to help Sun with title run
With the addition of the versatile guard, the Sun are now in a better position to chase the New York Liberty up the WNBA standings. They currently have an 18-6 record, 2.5 games behind the Liberty, but are 5-5 in their last 10 after a blazing start to the season. Mabrey could be just what they need to reignite another run.
The team is ranked 10th in the league in 3-point shooting percentage, hitting just 5.5 per game on average. They're also eighth in scoring — so Mabrey may be able to lift the team herself while also getting more shooters involved.
The Sun are notably the second-worst team in the league in terms of assists per game, one of the main reasons they went and got Mabrey in the first place.
For the Sky, the trade signals a more future-first approach, as Mabrey was their top 3-point shooter and one of their starters. They're already down starting center Elizabeth Williams, who underwent surgery on her meniscus in June.
