After the Chicago Sky's impressive 93-85 victory against the Las Vegas Aces last Tuesday night, a trade involving the move of Marina Mabrey to the Connecticut Sun was announced today. It was a surprising move from Chicago as Mabrey was viewed to be a quality veteran piece to the team. In response to the trade, Michael Jordan's ex-wife Juanita Vanoy shared the details on her Instagram stories.
Aside from being known as the wife of the Chicago Bulls legend, Vanoy has shown her support for the Sky franchise in the past. Back when Angel Reese received flowers before her team's Saturday night matchup against the Liberty, she shared a snap of the moment in her Instagram stories. This time around, she is well aware of the Sky's midseason trade.
The trade package involved Mabrey and the Chicago Sky's 2025 second-round pick being sent to Connecticut in exchange for Rachel Banham, Moriah Jefferson, a 2025 first-round pick and rights to swap 2026 first-round picks. With the promising season Chicago is having, this move continues to bolster their current depth and assets for the future.
Marina Mabrey previously played one season with the LA Sparks and three seasons in Dallas before she spent three seasons in Chicago. During this season, she put up 14.0 points (38.2% shooting, including 34.4% from beyond the arc), 5.1 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game.
Moreover, Mabrey was the second leading scorer on the team behind the impressive production of Chennedy Carter.
Chicago Sky GM releases statement concerning trade involving Marina Mabrey
Following the trade with the Connecticut Sun, Chicago Sky GM Jeff PaglioCca released a statement regarding Mabrey's contributions to the franchise during her tenure.
"Marina has made a significant impact over the past two seasons with the Sky," said Pagliocca, "behind her scoring ability, playmaking, competitiveness and commitment to the community. We appreciate all of her contributions to the organization and wish her continued success in the league."
The former Sky forward established herself as one of the best veterans playing in the WNBA. Now, she has just been acquired by an excellent ball club in Connecticut. The Sun ranks second defensively (93.8) and third offensively (102.5) in the league.
Those numbers easily speak for themselves as the team has established themselves to be a prominent two-way threat to their opponents.
The addition of Mabrey will add a reliable 3-point shotmaker, which will continue to enhance the offensive spacing of the team. She is also an excellent rebounder for her position and not to mention a capable playmaker at the half-court.
With the Connecticut Sun hoping to compete for a championship once the playoffs begin, this is an excellent position for the former Chicago Sky guard to be placed in.
The team is in second place in the WNBA standings behind the dominant New York Liberty squad. They have won five games out of their last 10 outings and a .750 winning percentage so far this season.
