WNBA star Caitlin Clark was asked to comment on Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides' recent comments on her humor. The young star was described as a 'really funny person' by her coach, which made reporters curious.
Speaking to them, the 2024 No. 1 overall pick explained that she's not the type to tell jokes all the time. However, she revealed, that to get candy on Halloween, she had to tell jokes to her neighbors back in Des Moines. This tradition was embraced by somebody close to Clark, her mother.
"I don't have a joke. I don't really tell jokes like that. In Des Moines, this actually kind of crazy, but when we trick-or-treat, you have to tell a joke to earn your candy. I guess no other place really does that in the country, so when you knock on the door, you have to tell a joke.
"I know my mom's a stickler about it. Like, if you don't tell any joke, you're not getting any candy," she said.
Christie Sides refused to tell Clark directly that she was a funny person, but it didn't take long for the media to relay those comments to Clark.
"Caitlin is, I won't tell her this, but I'm sure she'll hear. She's a really funny person. She has us laughing a lot, on the practice court, a lot of times," Sides told reporters this week.
Even though she shows a competitive spirit every single game, Caitlin Clark is often seen smiling and enjoying her time with teammates. The practice videos already showed that before Sides' confirmation.
Caitlin Clark compared to NBA superstar by former WNBA player
Caitlin Clark has been a leading figure in the WNBA ever since her arrival. Everything she says and does is under heavy scrutiny, especially from her critics. However, after a fan commented on X that she took a bad shot while trailing the Aces by two points, former WNBA player Val Whiting seemed to agree with the user.
"It was a bad shot. There was 15 sec left on the shot clock and there was a mismatch in the paint," Whiting wrote.
She went on and even compared Clark to Steph Curry, arguably the greatest shooter of all time, saying that bad shots aren't the same for Caitlin.
"I think she say that she had a post player on her and was trying to take advantage of the mismatch. The timing was just bad. But it’s just like Steph Curry. A bad shot for others is a good shot for Steph," Whiting opined.
Caitlin Clark and the Fever had a big chance to beat the Aces for the first time this season, but couldn't get it done.
