The Chicago Sky and Angel Reese faced harsh criticism from their supporters for their recent playoff failure. Their absence from the postseason isn't the only issue drawing ire from fans, as they've dealt with criticism and abuse from fans throughout the season. Reese has remained silent through all this and Washington Mystics player Brittney Sykes indirectly called her out on X (formerly Twitter).
Sykes hasn't been a fan of Reese as of late because of how timid she has been regarding the situation. Since Angel Reeseis the most famous player on the roster, Sykes expects the young player to weigh in on the subject. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, she posted about players having responsibilities, leading fans to speculate that it was a shot at the former LSU forward.
"Even if you don’t WANT the responsibility …. You STILL have a responsibility! Speak up," Sykes said. "The W has no place for the shit that’s being displayed or said to women in our league. Don’t use players to hide behind true intentions of being mean, nasty, and racist. It’s disgusting."
This is the first season the Sky have missed the postseason since the 2018 season. Last year, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs after consecutive losses to Las Vegas Aces.
Angel Reese's teammates, Dana Evans and Isabelle Harrison, have been vocal about the abuse they've received from fans this season. Both players shared the hardships they faced during their postgame interview following their 87-54 blowout loss against the Connecticut Sun on September 19, mentioning that fans have often called them out and created negative narratives about them.
Angel Reese showed support for Caitlin Clark's playoff rival
After the regular season, the WNBA has started to give out awards to the rightful winners. The league's Most Improved Player award was given to the Sun shooting guard, DiJonai Carrington. Carrington has stepped up her game defensively, especially when playing against Caitlin Clark.
After Carrington was given the award, Angel Reese showed love for X to let her fans and followers know that she supported her.
"So proud of you," Reese posted on X.
Both Reese and Carrington are viewed as rivals of Clark in the game. The Sky rookie has been the counterpart of the former Iowa Hawkeyes star since college. The Connecticut guard, on the other hand, has had a history against the Indiana Fever guard throughout the season.
