The WNBA Rookie of the Year award can arguably be narrowed down to Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese. While there is still a chance left for any one of them to take the award home, former player Nancy Lieberman believes that the Indiana Fever rookie is the clear winner.
The 1984 WABA champion was the commentator for the Dallas Wings vs. Indiana Fever game on NBA TV. During the commentary, the Basketball HoF player said that the Fever rookie is not just a leading candidate for the ROTY Award but she should also be in the conversation for the MVP award.
"By far, she’s going to be rookie of the year, if anybody thinks she’s not, feel free to call me or hit me on Instagram or Twitter. (…) she’s in the MVP conversation," Liberman said.
While Liberman's comments on the MVP conversation might be questioned, Clark is one of the frontrunners for the ROTY Award. Her team has a better record than Angel Reese's and she is arguably the biggest reason for the Fever's success this season.
Moreover, Caitlin Clark is also leading the league in assists per game category. She is in the same category of point guards as Sabrina Ionescu and Jackie Young.
Caitlin Clark vs Angel Reese: A look at the stats of two ROTY leading candidates
As easy as it might seem to give away the award to Caitlin Clark, her rival Angel Reese has an equal claim on the ROTY award. Reese, like Clark, is having a historical season. While Clark's success could be the biggest factor in winning the award, Reese has shattered multiple WNBA records in her rookie season.
So far, Caitlin Clark has played all 33 games for her team. With just seven games left in the season, the Fever rookie is ninth in the points per game (18.7) category and leads the league in the assists per game (8.4). She is ranked sixth in the efficiency and she is the only rookie in the top 10. Clark is also averaging 5.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game.
With Clark joining the roster, the Fever has a winning record [17-16] for the first time since 2016. The Fever are ranked sixth in the league this season.
On the other hand, Angel Reese holds the record for the longest double-double streak [15] in the WNBA. She (418 rebounds) also shattered Sylvia Fowles' record (404) for most rebounds in a season. Currently, the Chicago Sky rookie is leading the league in rebounds [13.1] per game.
While Reese might not have shown the best of her offense, she has certainly made a solid case for herself. The Sky is currently in the playoff picture. They are ranked eighth (11-21) and tied with Atlanta Dream in the win-loss record.
