Napheesa Collier’s Minnesota Lynx will head to Brooklyn on Thursday to open the 2024 WNBA Finals against Breanna Stewart and the New York Liberty. Collier and Co. booked a seat in the championship round after outlasting the Connecticut Sun in five games. Stewart’s Liberty dethroned the Las Vegas Aces in four games to secure their second-straight finals appearance.
The Liberty and the Lynx were the top two teams after the regular season. Basketball fans can expect a handful of exciting one-on-one duels in this year's Finals, but none will be more captivating than the showdown between Collier and Stewart.
Napheesa Collier won the 2024 Defensive Player of the Year award and was the runner-up to A’ja Wilson in the 2024 MVP voting. Breanna Stewart finished third in MVP voting after winning the award last year. The teams will be battling for the championship, but the Collier-Stewart showdown is a worthy subplot.
Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart's playoff stats
In six seasons in the WNBA, “Phee” has only missed the playoffs once and will make her finals debut on Thursday. Before this season, her deepest playoff run was in 2020, when the Lynx lost to the Stewart-led Seattle Storm in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, “Stewie” has played past the regular season in seven out of nine seasons. She won her first title in 2018 with the Storm and won the championship again in 2020. Seattle had a chance for a three-peat, but Stewart sat out the entire 2019 season due to an Achilles injury.
Last year, the two-time MVP carried the New York Liberty to the Finals but lost to the Las Vegas Aces. She will try to get the jump done this time against Napheesa Collier and the Lynx.

Playoff records shared by Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier
On Sept. 6, 2022, Breanna Stewart dropped 42 points against the Las Vegas Aces, tying the record for most points in a single playoff game. Angel McCoughtry accomplished the feat first against the New York Liberty in 2022.
On Sept. 5, 2024, Collier joined that list. She did it against the Phoenix Mercury in the first round.
Stewart is 3-0 in head-to-head games against Collier in the playoffs
In 2020, Breanna Stewart’s Seattle Storm swept Napheesa Collier’s Minnesota Lynx in the semifinals. Seattle won Game 1 88-86 and Game 2 89-79 before a convincing 92-71 victory in the clincher.
The only way for Collier to turn that record to a tie around is by leading the Lynx to a sweep of the Liberty in the 2024 WNBA Finals.
