The New York Liberty and Atlanta Dream had contrasting aims leading into the final week of the 2024 WNBA regular season. New York wanted to fend off the Minnesota Lynx from overtaking them for pole position in the playoffs race, while Atlanta desperately wanted to nail the last postseason ticket against the Chicago Sky and Washington Mystics.
The Liberty eventually earned the top seed with a game to spare, coincidentally giving the Dream a free pass to the playoffs. New York had no incentive to win its final regular season game on Thursday and subsequently rested key players. This meant Atlanta had little trouble beating the Liberty 78-67 to book their ticket to the postseason.
The next meeting between New York and Atlanta will be Game 1 of their first-round playoff series. Breanna Stewart and Co. will not be as accommodating when the postseason gets underway.

New York Liberty vs Atlanta Dream: Season stats
Liberty finished the regular season with a 32-8 record, the best in the league. They went 13-5 against teams with a .500 record or better. After a disappointing loss to the Las Vegas Aces in the 2023 WNBA Finals, few were left surprised by their strong showing this year.
On the other hand, the Atlanta Dream took a step back from its 2023 campaign. After comfortably grabbing a playoff spot last year, the Dream needed to win its final regular season game this time around to earn a postseason ticket.
