The New York Liberty were handed a 94-88 defeat by the LA Sparks during their midweek skirmish at Crypto.com Arena on Wednesday. The loss marked the sixth one for the top-seeded NY outfit this season. As for the Sparks, the much-needed win saw them snap their seven-game losing streak.
It was advantage LA from tip-off as they led the Liberty 46-39 at halftime. Their pace saw them get off to a hot start as they piled up a dominant 26-14 in the opening quarter. The second half of the matchup saw NY rally back with a series of buckets from Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu to come within six points, but the late surge wasn't enough to see the side through.
Despite the late comeback, the Sparks were able to keep the Liberty's offense in check. They are still the team with the worst record in the league this season after injuries to their key players hampered their campaign early on.
The Sparks were led by Dearica Hamby's 21 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Rickea Jackson added 19 points, three rebounds and three assists. Azura Stevens chipped in with 10 points while Rae Burrell propped up 18 points off the bench.
The Liberty's big guns struggled with Ionescu shooting 7-of-21 from the field, and 3-of-14 from the deep to end with 18 points, five rebounds and six assists. Stewart had a game-high 32 points, six rebounds and one assist. Nyara Sabally came off the bench to contribute 14 points and 11 rebounds. NY's bench could muster just 23 points.
The loss does not change the 2024 WNBA standings as the Liberty continues to take the top spot as the regular season inches to a close. The Sparks are still bottom-placed and are well out of playoff contention for the season.
