The New York Liberty continued its strong run in the 2024 WNBA season with a dominant 84-70 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Monday. The victory sees them continue their franchise-best run with 26-5 — the best in the league this season. Mercury, on the other hand, continues to remain sixth in the overall standings.
A collective effort saw the Liberty get past Phoenix at Footprint Center. Four of their five starters made double-figures even though the bench contributions were just 10 points. Veteran Breanna Stewart led New York with 21 points, six rebounds and six assists. Sabrina Ionescu chipped in with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists. Jonquel Jones had 15 points and seven rebounds.
Sharpshooter Ionescu had a dampener evening from beyond the arc with an uncharacteristic 3-of-10 shooting. She also managed just 5-of-17 from the field in 30 minutes of action on the hardwood.
Brittney Griner led the Mercury with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds. Natasha Cloud had a field day with 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists while Kahleah Copper poured in 14 points and five rebounds. The forward struggled from the field landing just seven of her 17 attempts, and went 0-of-6 from the deep. Diana Taurasi had 10 points, three boards and six assists on 3-of-9 shooting from FG range and 1-of-5 from downtown.
Liberty led right from the start and held the Mercury to just nine points in the first quarter. But the hosts bounced back in the second to even the scoreline 38-38 at halftime. The second half saw the top-seeded Liberty breakaway with their starters going full throttle on offense and holding Phoenix back from reaching striking distance.
