WNBA rookie Nika Muhl scored her first career points on Thursday when she and the Seattle Storm took on the Phoenix Mercury in the final game of the regular season. Muhl has appeared in 16 games for the Storm this season after being drafted in the second round of the 2024 WNBA draft.
While she appeared in 16 games and averaged 3.6 minutes of playing time, Muhl hadn't recorded a bucket. That all changed late in the game during the Storm's 89-70 win over the Mercury on Thursday. Muhl stole the ball from Celeste Taylor before scoring a layup on the fast break.
The moment had her Seattle Storm teammates on their feet as they cheered on the rookie. Meanwhile, on social media, Muhl's boyfriend, Nahiem Alleyne, a former Uconn player who is currently competing for AEK Athens in Greece, reacted to the score on social media.
In a post on his Instagram story, Alleyne reposted footage of the basket, along with a message saying:
"LFGGGGGG Layyyyyyy meeeeee"
"I am so proud of her" - Seattle Storm coach Noelle Quinn praises Nika Muhl after first career bucket
While Nika Muhl had struggled to score during the regular season, going just 1-14 from the floor throughout her 16 appearances for the Storm, she did rack up 10 rebounds and seven assists throughout the season.
While her hard work in practice hasn't necessarily translated to the scoreboard, Seattle Storm coach Noelle Quinn praised the rookie player following her first-ever career bucket on Thursday.
As she explained, Nika Muhl is an incredibly hard worker who goes above and beyond to make sure she stays ready. She was quoted by CT Insider as saying:
"I am so proud of her. She works so hard. I know that you guys see it and feel it because of who she is. I am just talking about these stay-ready games, the three-on-threes during the days off, the extra film sessions, the shoot-arounds. She is constantly on the court and is constantly preparing herself."
Following Muhl's first career bucket, she and the Storm will now shift focus to the postseason ahead, where the Storm is set for a first-round matchup with the Las Vegas Aces, who are eager to become just the second team in WNBA history to three-peat.
Given that the stakes are highest in the playoffs, Nika Muhl may see a decrease in minutes per game as coach Noelle Quinn looks to trim down her rotations for maximum efficiency.
