A'ja Wilson made it to the WNBA’s recently released list of the “nastiest crossovers and ankle breakers.” The league may be in the offseason, but it continues to engage fans with highlight reels from the 2024 season.
Wilson earned the No. 5 spot courtesy of an impressive move against the Connecticut Sun on Sep. 15. The WNBA posted the highlight of Wilson’s crossover, calling it “smooth like butter.” The three-time MVP went on Instagram to react to the video:
“Ooo not me making it to Handles Week," she wrote.
The play happened in the third quarter of the Las Vegas Aces’ 84-71 win over the Sun. A'ja Wilson received a pass from Alysha Clark, faked left before crossing over Connecticut Brionna Jones and finished the sequence with a layup. The basket gave the Aces a 68-51 lead before Wilson scored another 3-point play to dominate the Sun’s top-ranked defense.
The lefty forward finished with a game-high 29 points on 13-of-25 shooting. She also contributed nine rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Wilson's performance against Connecticut was another impressive display in a season filled with memorable performances, earning her a unanimous MVP award.
A'ja Wilson and the Las Vegas Aces couldn’t cap off their season with a three-peat
A'ja Wilson and Co. were heavy favorites at the start of the 2024 WNBA season to win the championship and complete a three-peat. The Las Vegas Aces, however, got off to a sluggish start and held a 5-5 record roughly a month into the season. They gained steam from mid-June to mid-July before stuttering again after several players competed in the Paris Olympics.
The Aces had a strong finishing kick to earn a spot in the playoffs against the Seattle Storm. Las Vegas looked vulnerable in some stretches but overcame the challenge of the Storm with their firepower. The first-round victory set up a rematch with the New York Liberty for a chance to advance to the WNBA Finals.
The Aces, who had easily defeated Breanna Stewart's team last year, were unable to repeat their success this time around. New York clinched Game 4 with a 76-62 victory to dethrone their rivals. A'ja Wilson's impressive performance of 19 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks wasn't enough to power her team to another championship.
