The Chicago Sky waived Kysre Gondrezick last month just before her $64,154 contract became fully guaranteed. Sky GM Jeff Pagliocca made the decision to give his team roster flexibility heading into the second half of the season. Gondrezick played five games and averaged 1.0 points, 0.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 3.2 minutes per contest.
On Monday, the Indiana Fever’s lottery pick in 2021 caught some flak following her boyfriend Jaylen Brown’s comments about Bronny James. The Boston Celtics star told Gondrezick that James Jr. wasn’t a “pro” after seeing the LA Lakers rookie struggle in the Summer League. Chicago’s former backup guard responded that James should be in the G League.
Critics lit up both Kysre Gondrezick and Brown for their comments. Many found it funny that the NBA star made that remark to his girlfriend who was cut by the Sky. The NBA Finals MVP has since clarified his statement while Gondrezick also gave hers in a now-deleted post:
“I think the G-league is a great place to work on your game if you ask me…. Wish the W [WNBA] had a G-league.”
The WNBA doesn’t have a G-League but some of their former players go to Europe to play professional basketball and hone their game. It might be an option that Gondrezick may be looking at. She might not get that opportunity to play in the WNBA again after her forgettable five-game showing with the Sky this year.
Gondrezick had so much promise when entered the pro ranks in 2021. She starred for Michigan before taking her talents to West Virginia in college. The Indiana Fever made her the No. 4 pick during that year. She couldn’t translate that hype and promise in the WNBA after averaging 1.9 points and 1.0 rebounds in 19 games during her rookie season.
Like Bronny James, Kysre Gondrezick might not be ready to play in the pros.
Fans react to Kysre Gondrezick’s “G-League” post
After Jaylen Brown clarified his “Bronny James” comments, many were interested if Kysre Gondrezick would follow the same script. Once the former Chicago Sky player’s post came out, basketball fans reacted:
“She thinks we care about her stance.”
One fan claimed he knew why Brown and Gondrezick clarified their comments:
“they messed wit the wrong fanbase”
Another fan gave a different angle behind the reason for the clarification:
“Black SUVs pulling up quickly”
@notretam commented:
“why’d she delete”
Bronny James fans and some sections of LA Lakers supporters will surely remember Jaylen Brown and Kysre Gondrezick’s comments. They will not hold back if the former WNBA player can’t find her way back into the league next year.
