WNBA fans reacted to an old video of Diana Taurasi playing for the UConn Huskies in the early 2000s and toying with her defender. The person who brought back the video deemed the legendary point guard a "menace," and many fans agreed.
The short clip shows Taurasi trying to get rid of her defender with her off-ball moves, getting physical with her and ultimately getting open to take and make a 3-pointer.
Some fans compared the young Taurasi to Paige Bueckers. The consensus No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft has a similar playstyle to the legend and uses some of those tactics to gain an advantage over her opponents.
"Paige going thru the same shii with no calls.. I guess you gotta fight thru it if you’re a superstar at UConn 💀😂," one fan said.
"Paige is really her daughter 🤭," another fan commented.
One fan criticized UConn's current players for lacking the intensity Taurasi used to show.
"inject this into the veins of every current uconn player pls they need this energy so bad"
Others kept calling her a menace and saying that nobody stood a chance to stop the future three-time WNBA champion.
"There was no guarding DT," one fan said.
"They have no idea about DT!!!" another fan said.
As some people noted, Diana Taurasi was trying to win a third consecutive NCAA championship with the Huskies. She led Geno Auriemma's squad to three consecutive titles from 2002 through 2004 and that video shows how she managed to be that successful.
Diana Taurasi still pondering WNBA future
After the 2024 WNBA season ended, Diana Taurasi's future with the Phoenix Mercury has been a huge question mark. The guard has shown impressive longevity that has allowed her to play with and compete against some of the best talents in the world.
Talking with the Associated Press about her future, Taurasi said she's taking her time to make a final decision.
"I don't take retirement lightly. I know the minute I say it or announce it, whether it's, you know, in a month or two months, I'm going to mean it," Taurasi said. "I talk to [wife Penny Taylor] and the Mercury, so I'm still in the thought process."
The 2025 WNBA season is a few months away and as the tip-off gets closer, we'll likely know more about Taurasi's future.
