The biggest trade in the ongoing WNBA offseason happened on Sunday. The Las Vegas Aces parted ways with longtime star Kelsey Plum to land Jewell Loyd and the No. 13 pick in the 2025 draft. Loyd joins a lineup that includes reigning MVP A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young.
SportsCenter ramped up the excitement for Aces fans by tweeting about the team’s “new Big Three.” Fans promptly reacted to the post:
“The person who tweeted this don’t watch the WNBA”
One said:
“Nah fr cause you how you disrespect Olympic GOLD Medalist Jackie Young like that tho”
Another added:
“Jewel literally da 4th best starter”
@logo3army commented:
“Jewel Lloyd only drops 30 pieces when she plays Indy.”
@pinkpuma21 continued:
“The network all about inclusiveness and women’s rights has no idea about the WNBA. Yay, hypocrisy”
Sportscenter, probably due to the backlash, changed the caption of its post. From hyping up a “new Big Three,” the account changed it to:
“The new look Aces”
In the photo, Jewell Loyd appeared with A’ja Wilson and Chelsea Gray. Excluded from it was two-time champ and three-time All-Star Jackie Young.
The 2022 Most Improved Player of the Year winner has been with the Aces since 2019 when the team made her the No. 1 pick. Only those who don't seriously follow the WNBA will exclude Young from any trumpeted Aces star core.
The Las Vegas Aces are one of the favorites to win the 2025 WNBA championship
Trading Kelsey Plum for Jewell Loyd and the No. 13 pick kept the Las Vegas Aces in the 2025 WNBA championship talks. DraftKings has the defending champions New York Liberty the favorites to defend their title with +190 odds. The Aces are second, with +250 odds. Napheesa Collier and the Minnesota Lynx, last year’s finalists, are third, with +340.
Losing Plum, second in Aces history in points, with 3,368, was big. She was arguably their best shooter, who opened the floor for A’ja Wilson to operate. Getting Jewell Loyd, though, has softened the blow of that loss.
Loyd, who led the Seattle Storm to two championships, struggled last season from deep. She averaged 27.4% from behind the arc, the lowest since she shot 20.8% in her rookie year. Nevertheless, Loyd averaged 19.7 points per game and has more size (5-foot-9) than Plum (5-foot-7). Adding another talent with the 13th pick in the draft will also help keep them in the hunt for another championship.
