The New York Liberty survived a late comeback by the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The Liberty snapped a two-game losing streak with an 81-78 victory to improve to 5-2 for the season. The Mercury, meanwhile, dropped to 3-4.

New York was in control of the first half, with their hot shooting to start the game. The Mercury started chipping away the lead in the second quarter before making things more interesting in the third period. They even got the lead over the Liberty midway through the fourth quarter.

The game was tied at 74-74 with around a minute left. Jonquel Jones made two free throws followed by a jump shot by Betnijah Laney-Hamilton to increase the lead to four with 30.1 seconds remaining. Sabrina Ionescu then iced the game from the free throw line.

Natasha Cloud led the Phoenix Mercury in scoring with 21 points, two rebounds and three assists. Kaleah Copper had a much better second half to finish with 20 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals on 7-for-19 shooting from the field.

Diana Taurasi also had a good second half, contributing a total of 14 points with four rebounds. Sophie Cunningham was held scoreless in the second half, but still had nine points and six rebounds. The Mercury bench was good in the first two quarters before failing to make an impact in the second half.

Sabrina Ionescu had a game-high 22 points to go along with six rebounds and nine assists in the New York Liberty's big win. Jonquel Jones put up 20 points, seven rebounds and two blocks on 7-for-11 shooting. She also his three clutch free throws with under a minute remaining.

Betnijah Laney-Hamilton was clutch and finished with 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Breanna Stewart had a quiet game of 13 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. The reigning WNBA MVP will need to do more if she wants to retain the trophy.

What's next for the New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury?

The New York Liberty will continue their three-game homestand on Friday when they welcome the still-winless Washington Mystics at Barclays Center. They then face the Indiana Fever on Sunday before a three-game road trip to Chicago, Atlanta and Connecticut.

Meanwhile, the Phoenix Mercury will end their road trip on Friday against the Minnesota Lynx. The Mercury are back at home on Sunday to face the LA Sparks before another road game versus the Seattle Storm.
