Jumping ability has long been a common critique aimed at WNBA players, but Kate Martin of the Las Vegas Aces has proven she can rise to the challenge in photos shared by her fitness trainer.
Martin, who will enter her sophomore season next year, stands just 6 feet tall but demonstrated her ability to touch the rim. Her trainer, Maxwell Schmarzo, captured and posted images from an offseason workout with the guard.

In a follow-up Instagram post, Schmarzo shared details about the training regimen he designed to enhance Martin's explosiveness.
“In the weight room we focused on good amount on being explosive and working on some single leg posterior chain work,” he said.
“Carrying that work over to the court we spent more than half our time working on defense and then the rest on specific acceleration drills - from finishing at the rim to creating space off the bounce.”
As Kate Martin continues her offseason training, she is preparing to return to professional basketball next month in the Unrivaled basketball league. She’ll take the court for Laces BC alongside Courtney Williams, Kayla McBride, Alyssa Thomas and Stefanie Dolson.
Kate Martin’s Aces teammate wants to dunk next WNBA season
Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson, Kate Martin’s teammate, has hinted at making a dunk attempt during the 2025 WNBA season.
The idea of lowering rims in women’s basketball has often been suggested by critics to enable more dunks, but Wilson expressed opposition to the concept, explaining it would affect players’ shooting mechanics.
During an episode of Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart’s “Roommates Show,” Wilson said she would rather work on improving her jumping ability than adjust to a lower rim.
“That could be like my offseason — I would much rather gear my offseason to like, 'Let's focus on this jumping' versus lowering like an inch. That could change all of our shots. Do y'all not understand that?" Wilson said.
"I would much rather just like, 'Ok, let's get in the gym, let's work.' You never know, next year I might dunk," she added.
Wilson, who stands 6-foot-4, didn’t need a dunk to earn her third MVP award in the 2024 season. She averaged an impressive 26.9 points and 11.9 rebounds per game and was unanimously named MVP.
Currently, only two active WNBA players have recorded dunks in a game: Brittney Griner and Jonquel Jones. Griner leads the league with a total of 26 career dunks.
