As the Connecticut Sun attempts to punch their ticket to the WNBA Finals, DeWanna Bonner finds herself wrapped in off-court drama. Fans recently came to the veteran forward's defense as a complaint was reportedly filed against her.
During the first round of the playoffs, Bonner approached reporter Christine Brennan following an interview with DiJonai Carrington. She did so in defense of her teammate as she felt she was attacked with a specific line of questioning. Following the tense moment, Brennan has reportedly sought out action from the league.
Many fans reacted in support of DeWanna Bonner and said that it should be Brennan who should be disciplined for how things unfolded.
Fans poured in to speak out against Brennan saying that the reporter shouldn't be covering the WNBA moving forward.
"CB is a sociopath," one fan said.
"Oh god get Christine away from the W," another fan said.
"Christine is a very well known POS," a fan said.
After these reports were brought to light, Brennan did respond to the allegations. However, she replied on X to espnW's Sarah Spain that the information was inaccurate and that she never filed a complaint with the league.
What did DeWanna Bonner do to Christine Brennan that warranted an alleged complaint with the WNBA?
The whole situation stemmed from the Connecticut Sun's first round matchup with the Indiana Fever. During Game 1, DiJonai Carrington poked Caitlin Clark in the eye while going for a steal. In her postgame interview with Carrington, Christine Brennan asked if she struck Clark in the face on purpose.
Carrington said that she didn't but Brennan continued to press the issue. She proceeded to ask multiple follow-ups, including one about her laughing with a teammate after the play.
DeWanna Bonner then decided to step in. She approached Brennan and the two spoke briefly before she headed back to the locker room.
"It was with this backdrop that the questions didn’t sit well in the Connecticut locker room, and a few minutes later, the Sun’s DeWanna Bonner confronted Brennan," Ben Strauss wrote via The Washington Post.
"Brennan repeatedly tried to introduce herself and explain what she said as Bonner implored the columnist to treat her teammates like humans. After nearly two minutes of mostly talking past each other, Bonner returned to the locker room."
Bonner is in her 15th season in the league and one of the leaders in the Sun locker room. Understanding her role, she came forward to stick up for one of her younger teammates after she felt she was personally attacked.
