Over the past year, Sophie Cunningham has become a disliked figure within the WNBA fan base. Fans were outraged to see her play a key part in the Phoenix Mercury's schedule release on Monday.
Phoenix went a different route with its announcement, having Cunningham, Natasha Cloud and Kahleah Cooper recreate awkward family photos.
Fans, however, didn't want to see her be showcased and accused her of being a supporter of President-elect Donald Trump.
Fans also posted a clip from Cloud's social media where she claimed the two are no longer friends because Cunningham voted for Trump in the 2024 election.
Cunningham, 27, is fresh off her sixth season with the Mercury. Despite being a second-round pick, the 6-foot-1 guard has managed to hang around in the league. Last year, Cunningham averaged 8.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists while shooting 37.8% from beyond the arc.
While a handful of her Mercury teammates were signed, Cunningham was not selected to be part of the first season of the "Unrivaled" league.
Sophie Cunningham has supported Donald Trump on social media in the past
While many fans have accused Sophie Cunningham of supporting Donald Trump, there is no saying who she actually voted for. That said, her social media activity in the past backs up the claims made by WNBA fans.
In the final weeks before the election, Cunningham put a video from Donald Trump Jr.'s Instagram on her story. The post was a compilation video taking shots at current Vice President Kamala Harris. Trump Jr. called her out for doing podcasts like Call Her Daddy while the country was being hit hard by hurricanes.
Among those to seemingly speak out against Sophie Cunningham for her internet activity was her teammate Natasha Cloud. She replied to a post about this, saying that she plans on keeping those around her accountable.
"I’m absolutely going to keep tweeting FACTUAL information. And holding those around me accountable for posting dangerous misinformation. Yes." Cloud wrote.
Based on how things have unfolded online, it's clear the Mercury have a disconnect in their locker room. Cloud has made it clear she is not a supporter of Cunningham and her beliefs, which could affect things behind the scenes.
Currently, the Mercury are a playoff team looking to grow into a contender. However, if they're ever going to win at the highest level, they'll need to overcome their evident off-court differences and disputes.
