Co-owner of the Atlanta Dream Renee Montgomery caught flak on X on Tuesday after she called out Caitlin Clark's fans. The former WNBA star made these comments on her podcast called Montgomery & Company.
According to the one-time All-Star, some fans of the star rookie have gone too far in how they show their support. Clark's fans have been accused of generating morphed AI pictures of and sending death threats to her rival, Angel Reese.
The Chicago Sky forward talked about it in the first episode of her own podcast, Unapologetically Angel.
This time, Montgomery pressured Clark's fans by calling them out in the new episode of Montgomery & Company. The former Dream player herself gave an example of how terrible some fans have been to Reese.
"For instance, a diehard Falcons fans can hate the Saints. But they will be going a bit too far if they created nude AI pictures of Saints players and sent them to the Saints players' families," Montgomery said. "That's what Caitlin stans have done to Angel Reese."
However, Clark's fans hit back and questioned Montgomery. Some fans asked the owner why she was judging one specific fan base and zeroing in on them.
"Please refrain from stupid blaming when no one really knows from where it came. Does Reese even know?" One WNBA fan said.
"I am a teenager woc why r u trying to push this agenda and speak on my character or you don’t know me…?" Another fan responded.
"But this problem is not unique to the CC fandom, in fact she is victimized by it more than most," a fan gave her a bit of perspective.
Other fans were a bit more harsh in their response.
"We got people to fill that Atlanta @AtlantaDream arena," one of Clark's fans said.
"CC fans' lives matter," another fan said.
"Y’all need to start giving Caitlin a check the way y’all continue to use her name for clicks is insane," a fan said.
While there might be some unseemly characters indulging in mischief, many fans of Caitlin Clark feel that it's wrong to generalize about them.
UConn head coach called Caitlin Clark fans stupid in June
UConn's Geno Auriemma had a lot to say about Caitlin Clark back in June, especially regarding her fans. He didn't hold back in criticizing the fans during his appearance on The Dan Patrick Show.
"These people are so disrespectful and so unknowledgeable and so stupid that it gives women's basketball a bad name," Auriemma said. "So the kid was set up for failure right from the beginning."
According to Auriemma, because of how the fans talked highly of Clark before her career started, she became a target. Not only that, but he implied that they've set an unrealistic expectation of the Fever rookie.
However, Clark has lived up to, if not surpassed, those expectations. She is a favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award and has led her team to the playoffs. Clark's fans seem to feel vindicated in their high hopes from the Fever star.
