Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington shared a sweet image of herself with her late grandfather on Instagram. She included a short yet heartfelt caption in the image.
The news of Carrington's grandfather’s passing came following a standout season in which she earned the WNBA Most Improved Player of the Year award.
In a post on her Instagram Stories, DiJonai shared a heartwarming photo of her grandfather kissing her on the cheek after a game. She added the caption:
"My heart."
Carrington had a career-defining season with the Sun this year, starting all 39 games after starting just three games in the previous three seasons. The shooting guard averaged 12.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists, earning her the Most Improved Player award.
DiJonai Carrington responds to comments mocking her grandfather's death
In mourning the loss of her grandfather, DiJonai Carrington expressed frustration as people mocked her for the loss. The star vented on X (formerly Twitter), furious that others would try to take advantage of her situation for amusement.
"Wow. mocking my grandfather’s death & our family’s pain/mourning as a way to incite hate on me, once again, because of a basketball game is just so vile. whoever you are, i pray God heals that hate in your heart & that evil spirit within you,” she wrote.
However, she still thanked those who expressed support as she coped with her grandfather's death.
"Thank you for all the love, condolences, & prayers as well. I don’t only see the hate and negativity. Unfortunately, at a time like this, the bad just hits harder. But I truly do appreciate all of the love fr!" she wrote.
DiJonai Carrington is preparing for her debut in the inaugural season of the Unrivaled Basketball League, where she will join Jewell Loyd, Courtney Vandersloot, Rickea Jackson, Breanna Stewart and Aaliyah Edwards on Mist BC.
