New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu congratulated former teammate Michaela Onyenwere on her Hall of Fame induction. Ionescu commented with a two-word message on Onyenwere's Instagram post:
"Congrats girl"
Michaela who now plays for the Chicago Sky announced on Instagram on Sunday that she had been inducted into her high school's Hall of Fame.
"I was recently inducted into the Grandview Highschool Hall of Fame for both Basketball and Track and Field! I am humbled, blessed and grateful to leave a legacy of this magnitude at a place that once meant so much to me," Michaela wrote on Instagram.
Sabrina Ionescu and Michaela Onyenwere's relationship dates back to the 2021 WNBA Draft, when Onyenwere was selected sixth overall by the New York Liberty, joining Ionescu as a teammate. During her time with the Liberty, Onyenwere earned Rookie of the Year honors in 2021 and was named to the WNBA All-Rookie Team.
Despite now being rivals, Sabrina and Michaela have maintained a strong relationship. The two are frequently spotted training together during the offseason and have been vocal in their support for each other's careers.
Sabrina Ionescu undergoes successful thumb surgery to stabilize UCL
New York Liberty guard Ionescu underwent successful surgery on Dec. 6 to stabilize the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in her right thumb, according to ESPN's Alexa Philippou. Ionescu suffered a high-grade UCL tear during Game 4 of the WNBA Finals.
Ionescu confirmed reports of her surgery on Instagram, posting photos of herself in a hospital bed on Dec. 9. In the photo, Ionescu is seen smiling and giving a thumbs-up with her left hand, which was wrapped in a cast.
"Married my best friend, won a gold medal, and a WNBA championship all in the same year. God is good ... ps: getting my thumb fixed was quite the bday present," Sabrina wrote on Instagram.
The WNBA champion was one of the driving forces behind the Liberty's first title. She averaged 18.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists last season
