On Friday, Sabrina Ionescu joined the athletes from Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. The New York Liberty star and the Americans rode a boat that cruised along the Seine River before stopping at the Trocadero. Ionescu had a blast during the entire event.
Ionescu isn’t a stranger to international basketball competition. She has been representing USA Basketball since the 2013 U16 FIBA Americas. The deadeye shooter, however, is making her Olympics debut.
The Americans were one of the most sought-after delegations in Paris. With basketball stars such as LeBron James, Steph Curry, Joel Embiid and others, Ionescu didn’t miss the opportunity to capture moments with them.
The three-time WNBA All-Star is expected to play a crucial role in Team USA’s women’s national basketball team. It wasn’t surprising that many of her recordings featured the NBA superstars.
Ionescu and Steph Curry are quite close, so it was natural the two of them were often featured in the video. Last year, they competed against each other in a special 3-point shootout that the Golden State Warriors superstar won.
If her schedule allows it, expect Sabrina Ionescu to cheer for the men’s basketball team in the Olympics.
Sabrina Ionescu lacks an Olympic gold in her glittering basketball resume
Sabrina Ionescu was a two-time John R. Wooden Award winner in college and was the WNBA’s No. 1 pick in 2020. She won a gold medal in the 2019 Pan American Games, the 2013 U-16 FIBA Americas, the 2014 U-17 FIBA World Cup and the 2022 FIBA World Cup in Australia. This year, she might finally add an Olympic gold to her already glittering basketball resume.
Ionescu will have a big chance of walking away from Paris with the said hardware. The Liberty guard is on the same roster as A’ja Wilson, Diana Taurasi, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi and New York teammate Breanna Stewart. She will also play alongside Jackie Young, Kelsey Plum, Kahleah Copper, Napheesa Collier, Jewell Loyd and Alyssa Thomas.
Team USA has won the gold medal in seven straight Olympics. Sabrina Ionescu expressed her excitement in helping the Americans continue their stranglehold of the event. Ionescu’s shooting, playmaking, competitiveness and basketball IQ will be assets Cheryl Reeve will lean on.
Ionescu had a blast during the opening ceremony. She will have an even greater time if she gets her first Olympic gold medal in about two weeks.
