The New York Liberty continued their winning ways, notching up a 77-70 win against the Seattle Storm at Barclays Center on Thursday. The win keeps NY as the top seed, while Seattle takes the fifth place after slipping to 20-14 as the 2024 WNBA regular season inches to a close.
Liberty was buoyed by performances from Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, who led with 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Breanna Stewart had 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Sabrina Ionescu chipped in with 17 points, six rebounds and eight assists. Jonquel Jones also added 15 points and eight boards.
The Storm were led by Skylar Diggins-Smith's game-high 21 points, four rebounds and six assists. Gabby Williams tallied 17 points, four rebounds and five assists while center Ezi Magbegor had 13 points and seven rebounds.
Guard Jewell Loyd had an off day with just six points on 3-of-8 shooting from the field and 0-of-3 from deep. The bench didn't offer much either; racking up a paltry four points collectively, as Seattle's dismal record against top teams continues.
At no point in the game did the Liberty slip up as they led each of the quarters. AT halftime, Storm kept things tight with the scoreboard reading 40-36 with NY taking a four-point lead. Despite the close contest, the hosts eventually emerged winners and took the three-game series 3-0 between the two this regular season.
The win improves the Liberty to 28-6 overall, with eight wins in their last 10 games, further solidifying them as the team with the best home record (15-2). The third-placed Minnesota Lynx are the only other team to have 15 wins at home so far this season. Second-placed Connecticut Sun are 13-4 in their backyard.
