The WNBA could be getting a new owner in Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian, who is the husband of tennis legend Serena Williams. On Tuesday morning, Ohanian took to social media, thanking Nike and the WNBA for sending him a Girl Dad care package filled with WNBA and Kobe Bryant gear. Ohanian, who shares two daughters with Williams, shared a photo of the care package.
Included was a pair of Kobe Bryant shoes, a Girl Dad basketball with Kobe Bryant's Mamba logo and a beanie-style hat with Girl Dad embroidered across the front. In addition, the care package came with a Mamba-branded bag and the league's famous orange T-shirt with their logo.
The photo caught the attention of fans; however, one fan asked if Ohanian had a favorite WNBA team, or was waiting to purchase a team before aligning himself as a fan. In a surprising move, the Reddit founder shared an emoji that raised eyebrows, fueling speculation that he could be purchasing a WNBA team.
While it doesn't appear as though a WNBA team is currently for sale, the league is expected to undergo an expansion. Given the league's timeline for another expansion beyond that, Ohanian could wind up finding himself in an ownership role sooner rather than later.

Looking at the WNBA's plans for expansions amid Alexis Ohanian's recent post
Currently, the W has plans to expand to 13 teams for the 2025 season, with Golden State already set to have a team. The deal was announced back in 2023, with W commissioner Cathy Engelbert making it clear that the league has plans to expand beyond 13 teams.
While the addition of the new Golden State team, the league will have 13 teams. Although this may confuse NBA fans given that conferences are balanced with an equal amount of teams, in the W, playoff seedings are done by overall record, not conference ranking.
This will allow the W to add the Golden State franchise for the 2025 season, while also planning to add a 14th team for the 2026 season. As Engelbert explained to ESPN prior to the draft back in April, Philly, Denver, Toronto, and Nashville are all potential landing spots for new franchises in the years to come:
"It's complex because you need the arena and practice facility and player housing and all the things you need, committed long-term ownership groups. And so, the nice thing is we're getting a lot of calls, we're continuing to engage with cities.
"These can either take a very long time to negotiate or it can happen pretty quickly if you find the right ownership group with the right arena situation."
Of course, with the W currently going drawing in more viewers and fans than ever before, the next few years could see some big changes for the league. Given the situation, Alexis Ohanian will seemingly have several opportunities to acquire a team in the next few years depending on the league's expansion schedule.
