Shannon Sharpe defends his take regarding Caitlin Clark

Shannon Sharpe has responded to a fan questioning his opinion on WNBA rookie Caitlin Clark not being part of the Women's USA team for the 2024 Paris Olympics. Team USA revealed its roster that will travel to France for the summer Olympics and many were surprised that the Indiana Fever guard wasn't included.

Many thought that Team USA should've included Clark on the national team, but she did not make the cut. However, Sharpe, together with Stephen A. Smith, believes that the rookie should've been included.

A fan didn't agree with their opinions on the matter and called them out on social media.

"Never thought I'd see the day @shannonsharpe and @stephenASmith would advocate to put a [sic] "unproven" player above the team when a gold medal is on the line," a fan posted on X.

Sharpe didn't let it pass as he argued why he thinks Clark should've been part of the squad.

"They’ve won 7 str8 gold medals and women’s 🏀 hasn’t been talked about like this until CC showed up," Sharpe responded.

Since 1996, the women's Team USA basketball has dominated the Olympic games. They've consistently won the gold medal and have not finished the tournament with a silver medal since 1976. The last time the women's team won the bronze medal, was back in 1992.

Clark has experience playing internationally. In 2017, she was part of the FIBA Under-16 Women's Americas team which finished the tournament in Buenos Aires, Argentina with a gold medal. The former Iowa star also won gold when she participated in the FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup in 2019 and 2021.

She was invited to a training camp for the 2024 Olympics in March. However, she wasn't able to attend at that time since it was at the height of the Final Four of the 2024 NCAA tournament.

What did Shannon Sharpe say about Caitlin Clark's Team USA snub?

Sharpe is one of the people who has endorsed the inclusion of Caitlin Clark in the national team. Although he's aware of the struggles that Clark is having, the former NFL star believes putting her on the team is the right move.

"Are we really trying to grow the game? Because this is the most popular women's basketball player in the world and it ain't close... So are we really trying to grow the game? Is that what we're really trying to do? Or are we just talking about 'we're trying to grow the game' and just bull jiving?" Sharpe said.

In her first 12 games in the WNBA, Caitlin Clark is averaging 16.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. However, she is shooting just 37.3 percent from the field and 32.7 percent on 3-pointers.
