Caitlin Clark has been a rookie sensation in the WNBA, however, she has been the subject of questionable opinions from basketball fans and analysts. This week, Phoenix Mercury Cindy Brunson is facing backlash for hypocrisy from Clark fans over a controversial post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
X user Ken Swift (@kenswift) called out Brunson for being hypocritical about her demand for the rookie and the Indiana Fever organization to be vocal in response to fans. In Swift's post, Brunson's controversial comment from last year was brought to light to counter her stance on the matter.
She then followed it up by defending her comments, highlighting her position as someone who only laughed at a "doppelganger situation" and nothing any deeper than that. However, fans still found her post problematic and continued to criticize her for it.
"She is just 100 percent a disgrace. No if and or buts about it. Has not buessines being in any sports job period. Only those that fit in her circle are from lies and hatred this so called human being."
Many wanted a response from the Phoenix Mercury organization. Others were not too pleased with Brunson's defense as they felt she had doubled down, making light of a serious matter.
"Like I hope Phoenix Mercury is seeing this and fire her. That team is filled with nice people. Not unprofessional like Cindy," one fan posted.
"She is clearly trying to get attention. If you notice before she joined the hate wagon, she barely had any interaction on her page. Joins the haters and now she has more engagement. How sad to treat young women the way she is. @PhoenixMercury should be embarassed," another fan posted.
"It was literally last year. It was mean-spirited, and you knew it. I'm so sick of women being mocked for their appearances, especially by other women. Sports professionals should be above this. We need you to be better. Please be better," one fan posted.
"Doppelganger situation is another way to say I'm an idiot and insulting young women," this fan said.
"Cindy, you're a whole mean girl vibe," a fan posted.
Angel Reese sheds light on fan behavior and her relationship with Caitlin Clark
Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark were two of the most highly anticipated rookies in this year's rookie class for they performed at the collegiate level. The league envisioned their arrival as an important moment for the WNBA's growth for years to come.
One of the marketed aspects of the dynamic between the two players is their rivalry on the court. Basketball fans love a good competitive showing from two excellent athletes with Reese and Clark bringing it in each matchup.
However, the Sky forward shared on her "Unapologetically Angel" podcast that she has received toxic comments from fans:
"I don't believe in her heart that she has hatred towards me and I'm sure she believes that I don't have hatred towards her, but I think her fanbase has gone -- I literally saw something today that was like...
"Basketball is literally a game, we have so much fun with it, but when it comes to, but when it comes to death threats -- I'm talking about people coming to my address, follow me home, it's come down to that. On multiple occasions, people have made AI pictures of me, like, naked, literally. They have sent it to my family members. It sucks to see that.”
It will be interesting to see if things change with these revelations.
