Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever have endured a rough start to the season, and head coach Christie Sides minced no words when she highlighted how the team has managed to stay strong despite the adversity. The team's latest loss came against the Seattle Storm as they blew out Indiana, 103-88. It also saw the Fever slip to eight defeats and stay with the second-worst record in the league with just one win.
Speaking to the media after the loss, Sides spoke about the Fever having played the most games and against opponents outclassing them in all departments of the game:
"When I took this job last year, we won five games. And we build a strong culture here that I am so proud of. We have a great player in Caitlin Clark. So things do change when you get those new players and we come to camp and then we play more games than anybody, playing the best teams in the league," Sides said.
"I'm so proud of their fight, they keep coming back. Even Caitlin, she's getting beat up, she's fighting."
Clark ended her evening with 20 points and nine assists. NaLyssa Smith had 23 points and 10 rebounds. But Indiana was outplayed by Seattle with four of their players in double figures and the unit showing elite defense to lock down Indiana's offense.
Caitlin Clark's no-foul call fires up Christie Sides
In what was a drama-filled Thursday night between the two teams, coach Christie Sides was handed a technical foul while defending Caitlin Clark. A possible no-call saw her make her displeasure clear as the guard went in for a basket. Even Clarke picked up a tech following her altercation with Victoria Vivians.
The rookie later shed light on the incident:
"I think just being competitive is who I am and what I've done my whole career. At times, there's ways I can probably channel it a little better. That's just basketball at the end of the day. That's never going to change, I'm never going to lose that. Feel like I'm getting hammered."
It seems to be a period of growing pains for Indiana (1-8) and a massive learning curve for Clark, who has been impressive with her scoring so far. The other aspects of her game are still WIP, especially when playing at the highest level.
Now, the action shifts to her much-awaited matchup against college rival Angel Reese.
