Caitlin Clark has been the focal point of multiple racist issues plaguing the WNBA in recent months. Fans have been vocal about the attacks on social media with their most recent target being NBC sports reporter Nathalie Esquire.
On Friday, fans pointed out Esquire's lack of professionalism in her social media activities following numerous instances where she called the Indiana Fever star different names such as "White Bread," among others.
“Natalie Esquire fraternises with a lady who’s insulting CC based on her race. Same lady who called CC a school shooter, DEI hire and a Man. As long as she’s employed by @NBCSports and @WNBA , we can assume professionalism isn’t prioritised. She’s a rage baiter, not a journalist,” one fan tweeted.
The fan provided several screenshots where Esquire interacted with a fan who threw insults at Clark on social media.
Others called for NBC’s immediate attention as they deem Esquire’s social media actions alarming for a reporter.
“Just popping on for a bit in time to catch one of the CCFC calling out a NBC reporter for replying to a post calling Caitlin “White bread”, and then claiming she “replied to the wrong post” when called out on it. @NBCSports is this acceptable behavior from a “professional reporter?” Is latching onto racist comments only acceptable when it comes to Caitlin?” one fan wrote.
“The comparison came up of Caitlin Clark’s rookie season VS A’ja Wilson’s, and once again, the illustrious, unbiased @NBCSports WNBA Reporter moved those goalposts to fit her narrative,” another fan said.
Meanwhile, some commented on the situation, pointing out what they think sports fans want from the media.
“The consumer wants sports media to be nonbiased, knowledgeable, and to maintain a standard of professionalism. That shouldn't be too much to ask for,” one fan wrote.
“They want their league to grow but they spend everyday hating on the ONE person who’s responsible for bringing eyes/attention to the league. The WNBA commissioner either needs to step in or clean house of these haters unless they wanna go back to having no one watch…,” another fan wrote.
One fan compared Esquire to Skip Bayless, who is a critic of NBA superstar LeBron James.
“We know she’s a cc hater but that’s just like Skip Bayless,” one fan said.
"I'm a hopeless optimist that believes folks can be persuaded with more conversation. Esquire is too far gone. Really shameful for someone that works for a big platform," one fan wrote.
