Sheryl Swoopes had a clear response to the rumors linking her as Teresa Weatherspoon's replacement on the Chicago Sky. The WNBA legend's name was floated as a potential replacement for Weatherspoon, as one fan said that was the only way they could keep Angel Reese long-term.
"Wonder if Sheryl is about to be our next coach. That may be the only option to keep Angel in the future," this fan tweeted on Friday.
Swoopes had a short but clear response to let everybody know what she thinks about this gig.
"HELL NO!!!"
The Chicago Sky have gone downward since winning the WNBA championship in 2021. They've gone from 26 wins and the No. 1 seed in the East in 2022 to 18 victories in 2023 and the eighth seed in the conference to 13 wins and the 10th overall spot in the league.
Teresa Weatherspoon only spent one season in charge and was dismissed after missing out on the playoffs despite having the eighth seed for a big chunk of the season.
Sheryl Swoopes hasn't stated a desire to coach in the league, as she's currently working as a color commentator. The Sky appear to have deep issues that need to be addressed by the next coach. The offseason is just starting so they'll have time to study their head-coaching options.
Sheryl Swoopes speaks about Angel Reese comparisons to Dennis Rodman, A'ja Wilson
During her appearance in this week's Unapologetically Angel podcast, Sheryl Swoopes gave Reese her flowers. Discussing the comparisons between Reese and NBA legend Dennis Rodman, the four-time WNBA champion said that the forward was a different rebounder than the Worm.
"I know a lot of people are like, 'Angel reminds me of Dennis Rodman.' ... Dennis Rodman was crazy, but I like to try to find the female," Swoopes said on Thursday. "But there's still something very different about your rebounding. You just find a way to get the basketball. You're 6-foot-3, but you rebound like you're 6-foot-5, 6-foot-6," she continued.
Moreover, she likened Reese to one of the biggest stars and best rebounders in the league, A'ja Wilson.
"You and A'ja, I think are, to me, the two best rebounders in the league right now," Swoopes said.
Angel Reese still has room for improvement, but she showed interesting things in her rookie campaign. She averaged 13.1 rebounds and broke the single-season rebounding before being overtaken by A'ja Wilson.
