Connecticut Sun guard DiJonai Carrington reiterated that their landmark game at Boston's TD Garden on Tuesday should have been aired on national television and celebrated.
The Sun hosted the LA Sparks in a sold-out "home" game at the TD Garden, lair of the NBA champions Boston Celtics, which marked the first time that the venue hosted a WNBA game.
Unfortunately, the game was not broadcast live on national TV. DiJonai Carrington lamented about the decision and called out the league in the lead-up.
She reiterated her stand on it when asked after their 69-61 win over the Sparks, saying:
"I think there could have been more publicity or promo from the top [of the league], you know. When Connecticut had announced that we were having this game, almost a year ago, maybe, I don't know... There was ample time to do what needed to be done [to promote it]. But it didn't matter anyways because they [fans] showed up, it was loud and we got the W...
"The game should have been on the national television broadcast. You shouldn't have to pay for any type of subscription to see a game that's this historic, in my opinion."
The Sun had their home crowd, numbering 19,000, rocking and cheering as they battled it out against the visiting Sparks. They had their struggles early in the contest but picked things up as the game wore on.
Leading the charge was DiJonai Carrington, who ended up with Player of the Game honors after finishing with 19 points and four rebounds in 31 minutes.
Backstopping her was Brionna Jones, who had 15 points and seven rebounds, with Tysha Harris adding 14 points. Allysa Thomas, meanwhile, had all-around numbers of nine points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
The win improved Connecticut to a 20-7 record, second in the league.
DiJonai Carrington honored to have played at the TD Garden
The Connecticut Sun made history on Tuesday by hosting the LA Sparks in the first WNBA game to be played at the TD Garden.
DiJonai Carrington felt honored to have played at the TD Garden in Boston and she was happy they delivered in front of the sellout crowd and came out with a victory.
They went on to beat the visiting Sparks, 69-61, to maintain their foothold in the top tier of the standings. In the lead-up to the historic game, DiJonai Carrington spoke about the significance of having their game at the TD Garden, saying, by way of CBS News:
"I've been to Celtics games and seen it full. We just haven't experienced that, so it will be fun and special. I know it's going to be rocking here."
She then later expressed her thoughts on the atmosphere the game had following their victory, telling the media:
"It really just shows how much this city loves sports. It doesn't matter, what gender -- they're going to show up and show out."
The Sun-Sparks game was the first professional basketball game played at the TD Garden since the Celtics won their 18th NBA title after closing out the Dallas Mavericks in five games on June 17.
