The first hooper to guest on Angel Reese's "Unapologetically Angel" podcast in 2025 was veteran Skylar Diggins-Smith, who had a highly entertaining conversation with the young host. One of the topics they discussed was Reese's relationship with her former Chicago Sky head coach.
Diggins-Smith brought up the fact that Teresa Weatherspoon was let go by the Sky last September and asked Reese how she felt about the parting of ways. Admitting that she was "heartbroken," the WNBA's leading rebounder last season opened up about what coach Spoon meant to her:
"I think she understood me...just being, like, a Black woman," said Reese.
In an Instagram story, showing the clip of Reese's response, Diggins-Smith echoed the respect and admiration for the Sky head coach with a two-word caption:
"Love Spoon," wrote Diggins-Smith in her caption.
While there were indeed some positives that emerged from Weatherspoon's lone season with the Sky — such as winning over Reese's trust and helping Chennedy Carter regain her form as a prolific scorer — the team's 13-27 record did not do her any favors.
There were also reports that Weatherspoon, who had no experience coaching a professional team prior to her Chicago stint, lost the Sky locker room, supposedly because she favored certain players over others.
No matter the reason for Spoon's Chicago exit, she and Reese have crossed paths once more, this time in the new 3x3 league Unrivaled. Last week, on the first playdate of the league, the Weatherspoon-coached Vinyl BC defeated Reese's team, Rose BC, 79-73.
Meanwhile, Diggins-Smith and the rest of the Lunar Owls BC are scheduled to take on Weatherspoon's Vinyl BC on Feb. 3.
Skylar Diggins-Smith compliments Angel Reese on her rebounding dominance
While Diggins-Smith made sure to show her respect for Weatherspoon — one of the WNBA stars who paved the way for her — she also gave props to Reese, who represents the future of the league.
In the same episode of "Unapologetically Angel," the Seattle Storm guard offered high praise for Reese's dominance on the boards.
"You can do too much passing, too much shooting, too much dribbling. Ain't no coach gon' tell you, 'You did too much rebounding,'" Diggins-Smith told Reese, who chuckled. "You have a knack for the ball, and you always have."
In 2024, Reese set the highest single-season average at 13.1 boards a night. Diggins-Smith, who has been playing in the WNBA for quite a while, made sure to acknowledge Reese's talent.
