During the much-anticipated rematch between Angel Reese's Sky and Caitlin Clarl's Fever, a big foul incident involving the two players transpired. The foul was called on Reese after her attempt at blocking Clark's shot resulted in the Fever rookie's head getting hit instead.
After the game, Reese highlighted the disparity in foul calls while pointing out that she felt some players received special treatment on the court. The incident occurred with just 2:53 minutes left in the third quarter when Clark drove straight for a layup at the ring before being met by Reese. In the replay, the Sky forward was seen originally aiming for the blocked shot but instead landed a hit on Clark.
Angel Reese made her comments during her postgame interview, as per Chicago State of Mind Sports (@ChiStateOfMind_).
"I think we were playing really hard," Reese said. "I think we went up strong a lot of times and we didn't get a lot of calls. And going back and looking at the film, I've seen a lot of calls that weren't made and I guess some people got a special whistle. ... Regardless of the referees, we're not going to be denied. Our goal is to win. ..."
As Reese was asked how she found the officiating tonight, she felt some calls could have been made in their favor. With how she and Kamilla Cardoso dominate the paint with their playstyle, Reese argued that going up strong for a shot and getting hit shouldn't warrant a trip to the free-throw line.
There are nights where certain calls won't go your way which will be a learning curve for Reese in her rookie year. The team's second head-to-head meeting with the Indiana Fever resulted in another loss, by a score of 91-83.
Caitlin Clark talked about Angel Reese's flagrant foul
Following the victory, Caitlin Clark was asked about the flagrant foul from Angel Reese. It was all about staying in the moment and remaining focused for Clark, as per The Athletic's James Boyd.
"What's going through my mind? 'I need to make these two free throws,'" Clark said. "That's all I'm thinking about. It's just part of basketball. It is what it is. Just trying to make a play on the ball and get the block. It happens. ..."
Clark didn't take Reese's hard foul as anything more than just playing the game at a high level.
Basketball is a physical sport that demands a lot from every player on the court. Coming from college and transitioning to the professional league involves an adjustment for rookies. It is something that Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark have welcomed as part of the learning curve in the WNBA.
