WNBA fans responded to Phoenix Mercury guard Sophie Cunningham's candid outburst following the team’s 90-66 blowout loss to the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena on Saturday. After the Mercury endured their fifth loss in six games, dropping to a 17-19 record, Cunningham called out her teammates.
The 28-year-old guard bluntly emphasized the need for improved teamwork and urged her teammates to show gratitude for what they do.
"We need to learn how to be great teammates. At the end of the day, we get to play basketball for a living, so that's a blessing. Maybe, changing our perspectives to start to be a little more grateful would be a good start," Cunningham said after the game, as quoted by the Mercury beat reporter Trevor Booth.
Hoops fans candidly reacted to Sophie Cunningham's statement, with one fan claiming that the team's locker room is divided.
"Thats a clear sign of something going wrong in the locker room, and the team is divided."
"Mercury should pass the ball more to Sophie for starts and the younger players without injury should be in the rotation more. Definitely some big issues happening, and at the end of the game last night Mercury just wasn’t showing up in the game," commented another fan.
A few X users agreed with Sophie Cunninham's sentiments and applauded her for speaking out publicly.
"Very good attitude Sophie. Wnba salary is not helpful and hopefully with news eyes, thing change but players attitudes have to change too," a fan wrote.
"This young lady is speaking truth. Competitiveness is one thing, but respect is another. Seems like Sophie will help the WNBA get even more popular," sad another X user.
"Amen!! Wonderfully put," wrote another fan.
One of the fans claimed that veterans Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner are holding the team back.
"The problems."
Sophie Cunningham and Phoenix Mercury have qualified for the playoffs
The Phoenix Mercury have hit a slump at arguably the worst time of the season. With the playoffs just two weeks away, their inconsistency has become a significant challenge for coach Nate Tibbetts.
Sophie Cunningham and co. currently sit in seventh place in the league standings and have already secured a playoff spot, but their recent struggles are cause for concern.
With four games left in the regular season, Coach Tibbetts and the Phoenix Mercury will be desperate to address their shortcomings and secure a few victories, with an ambition to enter the playoffs with renewed confidence.
