Sophie Cunningham watched Patrick Mahomes lead the Kansas City Chiefs to another AFC Championship game win on Sunday. Mahomes led a drive that resulted in a 35-yard field goal from Harrison Butker to give the Chiefs a 32-29 lead. Kansas prevented the Buffalo Bills from scoring again to keep its hope of a three-peat alive.
The Phoenix Mercury guard reacted to the win on Instagram with a five-word message.
“Why do ppl doubt us?” Cunningham wrote.
The Kansas City Chiefs, back-to-back Super Bowl winners, finished the regular season with a 15-2 record, the best in the AFC. They earned a bye in the wildcard round before dispatching the Houston Texans 23-14 in the divisional round. Still, Sophie Cunningham knew there were doubters. Some were convinced the Buffalo Bills would finally get over the hump against the Chiefs.
Instead, Mahomes had another crucial performance to give his team a ticket to Super Bowl LIX. The three-time Super Bowl MVP threw for 245 yards with a touchdown and rushed for 43 yards for two more scores. Kansas is 4-0 against Buffalo since 2020, including 2-0 in AFC Championship games.
The thrilling win earned the Kansas City Chiefs a matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles, who whipped the Washington Commanders 55-23 on Sunday. Kansas-Philadelphia is a rematch of the classic Super Bowl LVII, where the Chiefs pipped the Eagles 38-35.
No one will be surprised if Sophie Cunningham watches the next battle between the Chiefs and the Eagles on the NFL’s biggest stage.
Sophie Cunningham once tagged the Kansas City Chiefs after showing off her passing skills
Sophie Cunningham made a highlight reel play against the Atlanta Dream on May 19. Early in the second quarter, she stole the ball from Cheyenne Parker-Tyus before whipping a near full-court pass to Sug Sutton, who scored.
After the game, the Phoenix Mercury tagged the Arizona Cardinals to ask if they had seen Cunningham’s pass. The backup guard, most known for her defense, couldn’t resist calling the Kansas City Chiefs' attention.
The overhead pass Cunningham made against Atlanta was Mahomes-esque. It had enough air to sail past defenders before landing as intended in the receiver’s hands. Sug Sutton did not even have to dribble the ball to make the layup.
Cunningham had to let the Kansas City Chiefs know she was a fan and could throw the ball with accuracy too.
