Sophie Cunningham of the Phoenix Mercury is enjoying her team's four-day off by going to Meghan Thee Stallion's show at the Footprint Center on Wednesday night. The Mercury's next game is on Saturday against the Minnesota Lynx at the Target Center.
Cunningham shared a closeup video of Megan Thee Stallion performing on her HOT GIRL SUMMER TOUR, with GloRilla as a special guest. The duo has been touring around the United States and will visit four more cities before flying for the European leg.
Her fans in Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Dallas are surely excited to see the "Hot Girl Summer" artist. It wouldn't be surprising if players for the Sparks, Aces and Wings visit the concert if they have a free schedule like Cunningham.
Apart from Sophie Cunningham, another WNBA player who went to Megan Thee Stallion's concert was Chicago Sky superstar rookie Angel Reese. The outspoken forward enjoyed his time at the concert, coming onto the stage and dancing with the rapper last month.
WNBA fans were divided by Reese's cameo during the concert, as some wanted him to set an example to the younger generation, while others supported her because she was just having fun as a 22-year-old.
Reese told WGN News after the concert that it was a dream come true to meet Megan Thee Stallion, who she considers one of her idols. She also commended the Sky organization for allowing her and her teammates to have free time during the season.
Sophie Cunningham relegated to the bench in favor of Brittney Griner
Sophie Cunningham was a starter for the Phoenix Mercury last season, starting all 31 games. She began this year off the bench upon the arrival of Kaleah Copper. She played great and continued as the first player to back up the starters.
However, the Mercury were inconsistent, so coach Nate Tibbetts changed his lineup after five games. Cunningham was inserted into the starting lineup in the next five games before moving back to the bench in favor of the returning Brittney Griner.
Griner missed the first 10 games of the season due to a toe injury and has made an immediate impact for Phoenix. The team has compiled a 4-1 record since the center's return to the lineup. She's averaging 21.4 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.8 blocks per game.
As for Cunningham, she has been productive coming off the bench, putting up 8.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. The Mercury visit the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday before returning home to host LA Sparks, Indiana Fever and the Connecticut Sun.
