Fans have long speculated about a possible relationship between Bam Adebayo and A'ja Wilson, but after Sunday's intense game between the Las Vegas Aces and the Angel Reese's Chicago Sky, they interpreted a tweet from Adebayo as a subtle jab at the shooting struggles of the WNBA bigs.
Wilson secured the game-winning layup at the buzzer, giving the Aces a much-needed win after a rough 1-4 stretch. Despite the victory, she struggled with her shooting, making only eight of 28 shots (28.6%) in her 20-point, 18-rebound performance.
Similarly, Reese had her own difficulties, as she shot 4-for-16 (25%) in an 11-point, 20-rebound effort. With both bigs struggling, Adebayo tweeted about "building the day brick by brick," which led fans to speculate that he was referencing their shooting woes.
"Damn bro subliminal shots at Angel Reese from Bam 💥 was not on my bingo card for today," commented user @tmoneyunplugged.
Some users joked about how Adebayo subtly hints at his relationship with Wilson.
“Bam’s posts are soft launches 😭,” said @HeatvsHaters.
“You not slick,” added @HeatDiehards.
User @CrookieCrisps playfully suggested it would be amusing to see Wilson's response if Adebayo had a similarly poor shooting night.
“Waiting for the day A’ja roasts you back for going 8/28 with a tweet like this 😭.”
Here are more reactions to Adebayo’s post:
Despite the tough loss, Reese made history by becoming the first player in WNBA history to record at least 20 rebounds in three consecutive games. She also notched her 22nd double-double of the season, tying for the most by a rookie.
A'ja Wilson addresses her 'bricks' in the game
After her challenging shooting performance, Wilson took to Twitter with a humorous take on her 28.6% shooting.
“Could’ve built a house with my bricks today but WONT HE DO IT on this lovely Sunday afternoon,” she wrote.
She also joked about her buzzer-beating shot finally going in after a tough night.
Wilson is averaging a career high season with 26.8 points, 11.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.6 blocks per game while shooting 52.3% from the field, 38.1% from 3-point range and 87.1% from the free-throw line.
She has led the defending champion Las Vegas Aces to an 18-11 record, which is currently fifth in the league.
According to Tankathon, they have the fifth toughest schedule ahead with 11 games remaining — including matchups against the top-seeded New York Liberty, Connecticut Sun (twice), Seattle Storm, Phoenix Mercury and Indiana Fever (twice).
