Satou Sabally is one of the biggest names in the 2025 WNBA free agency following a five-year tenure with the Dallas Wings. The German-American forward decided to part ways with the Texan franchise after a poor 2024 campaign, sending the rest of the league into a frenzy, with rumors and speculation about her future coming every day.
On Wednesday, Sue Bird and fianceé Megan Rapinoe talked about Sabally and the Wings' options on their "A Touch More" podcast. More specifically, they talked about a potential "core" designation by the Wings.
Giving Sabally a core designation would secure her a super-max one-year contract worth $249,244. This would allow the Wings to engage in conversations with other teams about a potential trade for the forward. Just like the Las Vegas Aces with Kelsey Plum, this would give them the chance to get something in return for a star player.
“It will involve, I guess, a sign-and-trade," Bird said. "She will probably give a list of teams. We’ll see what happens. These can be sticky scenarios. Sometimes they work out great… Honestly, the story I remember is Swin Cash… She got cored in Chicago, wanted to leave and the trade took months to get done. She missed like half the season."
Rapinoe, meanwhile, suggested that the front office call Sabally's "bluff" and avoid being dictated to.
"I would inflict a little pain," Rapinoe said. "I would make sure a game check or two went uncashed.
"Maybe I wouldn't be the best GM."
Satou Sabally predicted to form a Big 3 in Indiana
Ever since she announced on a live stream that her time with the Wings had come to an end, Satou Sabally has been linked with the Indiana Fever. As the weeks went by, the buzz about a potential partnership with Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston became louder. One WNBA analyst believes the Fever are the best option for her.
"First team that comes to my mind is Indiana," Terrika Froster-Brasby said. "I know that sounds crazy, but I think Indiana would be a great place if she wants to leave Dallas. New head coach, new opportunities there. They are already a playoff team, and we've already heard and seen that there have been some questions about what NaLyssa Smith wants to do."
