Angel Reese had another outstanding outing for the Chicago Sky on Wednesday but couldn’t lead her team past the Connecticut Sun. Reese had a 20-point, 10-rebound and two-steal night in 36 minutes, but the Sky lost 83-75 in their rematch against the Sun. She is proving that she is deservedly in the conversation for the WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.
In the second encounter against the Sun, holders of the WNBA’s best record with an 11-1 mark, Reese more than held up her own. Her points were tied for game-high honors while her rebounds topped everyone. She gave as much as she took from established stars Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bronner and Brionna Jones.
After the said showdown, Angel Reese had this to say about who she patterns her game after:
"I think I'm trying to take pieces from everybody. Tina [Charles], taking my time around the basket. Being super versatile like Breanna Stewart, DeWanna Bonner... The competitiveness of AT [Alyssa Thomas]."
Leading into the draft, the scouting report on the “Chi Barbie” was her stellar play on the defensive end. She has more than lived up to that hype as she is already one of the best in the WNBA in that area.
Reese is a relentless rebounder, particularly on the offensive glass and one of the league leaders in steals.
Reese’s offense needs some polishing, but she doesn’t lack the confidence when the ball is in her hands. Against the Sun, she made 8-of-10 shots and went a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon is excited with how her game has been developing on that end.
Angel Reese’s shotmaking and ball handling have to improve to come close to Breanna Stewart’s game
Breanna Stewart is a two-time MVP for good reason. She consistently fills up the stat sheet on both ends of the floor. “Stewie” can shoot it anywhere on the court and can function as her team’s hub on offense. Angel Reese will have to improve her shotmaking and ball handling to even sniff what Stewart has offensively.
Reese has to expand her game to become more effective on offense. She has not made a 3-pointer in three attempts this season. The “Chi Barbie” has had some flashes of being a good passer, but that part of her game also has to be significantly better.
Breanna Stewart is hitting only 18.2% of her triples this season, but she owns a career 35.7% clip from that range. Stewart’s playmaking has also been at its best over her last two years, showing that she continues to evolve. Angel Reese can also take a cue from that.
