Team USA got its campaign off to a winning start, cruising past Team Japan 102-76.
The Americans, chasing a record-breaking eighth Olympic gold medal, started WNBA stars Chelsea Gray, Diana Taurasi, Napheesa Collier, Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson against Japan. The first quarter was relatively close, with Japan keeping pace with the favorites early in the game.
The U.S. fed A'ja Wilson in the paint and she finished the first quarter with 10 points. The Japanese tried to play fast, relying on long-range shots to keep in touch. The first quarter ended with a 22-15 lead for Team USA.
The second quarter started well for the Americans as they took a 30-18 advantage. Japan tried to keep it close, but Wilson and Breanna Stewart gave the U.S. a comfortable 50-39 lead into the half.
The third and fourth quarters were dominated by the U.S. which cruised to a 102-76 win at the end.

A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart confirmed that they are the best players on this team, scoring 24 and 22 points, respectively. The Las Vegas Aces center added 13 rebounds, four assists and four blocks in the win. She made 10 of her 16 shots attempts from the field, missed one 3-pointer and sank four of six free throw attempts.
Stewart grabbed eight rebounds and dished three assists while blocking three shots. She made 11 of her 15 attempts from the field, which included one 3-pointer. Besides these two, Brittney Griner, Sabrina Ionescu and Kelsey Plum scored in double digits, all dropping 11 points off the bench.
On the other side, Maki Takada scored 24 points, while Yamamoto and Miyazaki contributed 17 and 12 points, respectively. This wasn't enough against a team that showed off all of its power, making a statement in its first game of the competition.
