On Monday afternoon, A'ja Wilson and Team USA took the floor for the first time in the 2024 Olympics. They kicked off the Group Phase round against Japan.

This was a notable matchup for the United States, as it was a rematch from the gold medal game of the 2020 Olympics. Similar to how she's been in the WNBA, Wilson dominated in Team USA's opening matchup of the Summer Games.

A'ja Wilson finished the game with Japan with a stat line of 24 points, 13 rebounds rebounds, four assists and four blocks. The Las Vegas Aces star had an efficient day from the field, converting 10 of her 16 shot attempts.

Wilson was by far the top individual performer for the United States against Japan. Along with leading her team in scoring, she also led them in rebounds and blocked shots.

Aside from Wilson, the other noteworthy standout for the U.S. was Breanna Stewart. The former MVP also had an all-around performance, notching 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.

Thanks to this strong start from Wilson and others, Team USA starts off the Olympics in the win column with a 102-76 victory over Japan.

Breaking down A'ja Wilson's career with Team USA

The 2024 Olympics are just the second time A'ja Wilson is suiting up for Team USA on this grand stage. She made her debut during the 2020 Summer Games, winning a gold medal in Tokyo.

Aside from the Olympics, Wilson played for Team USA in the 2018 and 2022 FIBA World Cups. She also won gold in each of these tournaments, totaling her medal count at three for now.

It is not shocking to see A'ja Wilson be an early standout for Team USA in the Olympics. Before the break in the season, she solidified herself as a frontrunner for MVP in the WNBA. In 24 games with the Las Vegas Aces, she is averaging 27.2 points, 12.0 rebounds and 2.9 blocks.

Based on how she came out and dominated against Japan, Wilson seems to have carried her momentum over from the WNBA. With her being one of the top two-way forces in the women's game right now, the United States will continue to lean on her throughout the tournament.

Before getting back to the WNBA and chasing another MVP and championship, Wilson is in a prime position to add a fourth gold medal to her list of accolades.
