Angel Reese's former Chicago Sky teammate, Marina Mabrey, was happy to share that she is forming a great bond with now-Connecticut Sun ally DiJonai Carrington.
The seven-year WNBA veteran out of Notre Dame opened up about it during the behind-the-scenes shoot for the newly formed 3-on-3 Unrivaled Basketball League, where she and Carrington are set to participate in its inaugural season beginning this week.
Mabrey shared that after some time, the two started warming up to one another and are steadily building on their friendship both on and off the court, saying:
"She loves me, she's all talk. That girl loves me to death. We're building a friendship for sure. She brought some seasonings in a Louis bag and has to like me a little."
Check out what she had to say below:
Marina Mabrey was traded from the Sky to the Sun midway last season. With Connecticut, she averaged 14.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and a steal in 16 games. She was a key piece for the team in the playoffs, going for 15.9 points in seven games in helping the Sun reach the semifinals.
Carrington, for her part, had numbers of 12.7 points, five rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals in 30 minutes, which were all career-highs, to win the WNBA Most Improved Player award and named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team.
In Unrivaled, Marina Mabrey and Carrington are in opposing teams, with the former rostered with Phantom Basketball Club and the latter playing for Mist Basketball Club.
The newly formed league will tip off on Jan. 17 in Miami, Florida, and run until March 17, including the playoffs. It is designed to give women's professional players a viable alternative to showcase their stuff while earning good money during the WNBA offseason.
Marina Mabrey and DiJonai Carrington have a history of trash-talking one another
Where Marina Mabrey and DiJonai Carrington are now is like night and day from when they were still rivals in the WNBA, where they were not shy to engage in thrash-talking.
One instance came in a WNBA playoff game between the Connecticut Sun and Dallas Wings three years ago when Mabrey, then playing for the Wings, had a pushing match with Carrington and had a spirited back-and-forth of words. Among those who witnessed it in the front row was NBA superstar Ja Morant of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Now with the Sun, the two have seemingly turned a new page and are connecting to great use for their team. They are valuable pieces, alongside All-Stars DeWanna Bonner and Alyssa Thomas in making the Sun a steady force not only for the present but also in the foreseeable future.
