Chicago Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon started Chennedy Carter on Marina Mabrey in their game against the Connecticut Sun. Carter and Mabrey were teammates with the Sky for a few months so the two were no strangers to each other. Weatherspoon, who knew how her former player could hurt them, asked her best perimeter defender to take on Connecticut’s sweet-shooting guard.
With 2:18 left in the first quarter, Mabrey posted up Carter deep in the paint. The former’s up-and-under move forced the latter to prematurely jump. The Sun’s new acquisition couldn’t even attempt a shot as the Sky guard emphatically brought her hand down, hitting Mabrey in the face. After a quick review, the referee called a Flagrant Foul 1 on Carter.
Basketball fans reacted to Chennedy Carter’s forceful hit against Marina Mabrey:
“Don’t blame her for wanting a trade. That team is toxic and it starts with coach.”
@ButlerStuff asserted:
“Chennedy needs to go!”
One fan stayed on the same thread:
“Not shocked. That’s her. A loose cannon with questionable ethics.”
Another fan thought it wasn’t just Chennedy Carter who should be held accountable:
“At this point, it’s on the coach. Clearly, this is the culture she’s created.”
"So uncalled for 😑," one fan said.
Carter was in hot water early this season after she took a shot at Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. The WNBA later upgraded the foul against Carter in that game to a Flagrant Foul 1.
Teresa Weatherspoon released a statement following that controversial incident:
“She and I have discussed what happened and that it was not appropriate, nor is it what we do or who we are. Chennedy understands that there are better ways to handle situations on the court, and she will learn from this as we all will.”
Based on Chennedy Carter’s foul against Marina Mabrey, it seems like Weatherspoon was wrong when she assumed her player would “learn” from the Clark incident.
Marina Mabrey refused to comment about Chennedy Carter’s Flagrant Foul 1 against her
Marina Mabrey just had her best game for the Connecticut Sun. In 24 minutes, she contributed 24 points, three rebounds, one assist and one still. The former Sky connected on 9-for-13 shots, including 5-for-7 from deep. Despite the impressive line, most were interested to hear her comments about the Chennedy Carter hit on her.
Mabrey had this to say in response to that question:
“There’s levels to this s**t so I’m not gonna fight that.”
Mabrey asked the Sky to trade her in June, making her the latest star wanting to get out of Chicago. She followed the footsteps of 2021 WNBA Finals MVP Kahleah Copper and former MVPs Sylvia Fowles and Elena Delle Donne.
The Chicago Sky’s last regular season game will be against the Connecticut Sun. Fans will be expecting another rough battle between Marina Mabrey and Chennedy Carter.
