WNBA fans had some things to say about Caitlin Clark after the league's attendance reached an impressive mark for the first time in over two decades. Across the Timeline reported that the WNBA recorded its fifth season with over two million people attending games, the first time since 2003.
The highest combined attendance in the league happened in 2002 when 2,364,736 fans went to the arenas in the 256-game calendar. That season is followed by 2001 (2,332,249), 2000 (2,324,403) and 2003 (2,100,663). At the time of writing, 2,005,513 fans have attended the games in the 2024 season.
This piece of news served plenty of fans to throw shade at Caitlin Clark fans for claiming she was the reason new people were developing an interest in the W.
"But, but I thought that we were only watching cause of one person? CC and AR definitely brought more viewership and promotion for sure but the way some CC stans were acting you would think this gap would be HUGE 😂," one fan said.
"Lol interesting bc they said only one player brought attention for the 2024 year," another fan said.
"I thought they only came for …." another fan wrote.
Others threw shade at the new generation of players while highlighting two legends of the game.
"Seems like truly Sue Bird and DT were that girl instead," one fan said.
Nancy Lieberman explains why Caitlin Clark is a polarizing figure
Caitlin Clark has been a polarizing player since she made her WNBA debut. The Indiana Fever rookie has brought more attention to the competition, but the controversy has followed her without actively pursuing it.
Women's basketball legend Nancy Lieberman explained why Clark has become such a controversial figure in the league, comparing her to one of the greatest NBA players of all time.
"You know what? We got this point because this point has happened before. You know well enough that in 1984 when Michael Jordan came into the NBA, the ratings in the NBA were not great; Chicago stadium was tearful and he comes in from college winning the championship at North Carolina, and you know, the Jordan Rules were in effect, they're knocking the heck out of him," Lieberman told Dan Patrick on Friday.
There's no doubt that Clark's arrival has played a key role in the number of fans watching WNBA games, whether they like her or not.
