The Chicago Sky won just 13 of their 40 games last season. They finished the 2024 WNBA campaign with the third-worst record.
They were still a must-watch television more often than not. That's the kind of attention when you have two young stars like Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese.
That's why the front office should be quite thankful to their young duo. According to Annie Costabile of the Chicago Sun-Tribune, the team wouldn't even be relevant without them.
"Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso, too, have brought relevance to this team that they desperately needed at a time when, again, if not for them, they'd be completely irrelevant because of the product that they're putting on the floor," Costabile said.
The Sky added two building blocks to their project, which could appeal to other players in the future. They will also have the third pick in the upcoming WNBA draft, so they could get better over time.
Even so, Costabile believes it will be a long time before they can become a legitimate contender in this league:
"Angel and Kamilla are very interesting pieces," Costabile added. "And when you're talking about getting the right players in there, there's intrigue when you have young core pieces like that because you could be a part of developing them and developing towards a title-contending season. But the reality is that the Sky are still very far from that."
The Chicago Sky wants to give Angel Reese more help
At least the Chicago Sky seems to be trying to get better. They didn't extend a qualifying offer to bring Chennedy Carter back, but they're reportedly looking to add another star guard in the offseason:
"(Chicago) also met with Sun guard, DiJonai Carrington, who is a restricted free agent," Chicago Sun-Tribune's Annie Costabile reported.
Angel Reese has also openly admitted to actively recruiting players during her time at Unrivaled. There will be plenty of movement around the league in free agency, with multiple players signing one-year deals before getting long-term and lucrative contracts once the new CBA comes across.
Maybe the Sky's two young stars will be able to lure a star or two to take a step towards contention.
