Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark celebrated her 23rd birthday on Wednesday, which reignited attention on her perceived feud with WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes. Swoopes incorrectly said Clark's age during an episode of "Gil's Arena" on Jan. 29, 2024.
Swoopes said that Clark was already 25 then. A fan on X called Swoopes out and others for their "hate" for the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year.
"We already know that they all hate Caitlin Clark. She's the most beautiful and humble human being to have played in the WNBA IMO. It's going to be an interesting next season," a fan tweeted.
Others used that moment to troll Swoopes.
"According to Sheryl CC will be on the wrong side of 30 before the season starts," another fan tweeted.
"Lol. I hope shes not playing with 18 year olds anymore," one fan wrote.
"No according to Swoops racist ignorant calculations CC should be turning 27. Smmfh," a fan said.
Some found her old comment funny.
"This is how you do banter! Brilliant," a fan wrote.
One fan also threw shade at Angel Reese.
"Remember when the bitter Vets were Caitlyn has no idea what it's like up here as a Pro in the WNBA. Turns out it is Miss poopey pants Sheryl's girl Angel that can't handle it," a fan tweeted.
The "feud" started when Swoopes questioned Clark's NCAA scoring record on Gilbert Arenas' show. She incorrectly claimed that Clark had an extra year to break Kelsey Plum's scoring record due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Let's also talk about how much more experience that gives you over other players coming in," Swoopes said (2:08:42). "You have a 25-year-old playing against a 20-year-old. You should be killing them because you've been doing it longer than they have."
However, Swoopes later said that she had a conversation with Clark and admitted her mistake about her eligibility. The "feud" also involved fellow WNBA legend Nancy Lieberman who defended Clark and Swoopes responded by leaking her conversation with Clark.
Caitlin Clark's former Iowa Hawkeye teammate and bestie with a birthday shoutout
Caitlin Clark's friend and former Iowa Hawkeyes teammate Jada Gyamfi was among those who sent her well-wishes on her 23rd birthday. She posted a picture of them on her Instagram Story when they celebrated winning the Big Ten championship.
"Cheers to 23! I love you kid," Gyamfi wrote.
Clark and Gyamfi played together throughout last season's historic run to the national championship final. Clark went on to join the Indiana Fever as the 2024 No. 1 pick while Gyamfi stayed to complete her collegiate career.
