The basketball world was buzzing after Caitlin Clark delivered a remarkable performance in the Indiana Fever's 93-86 victory over the LA Sparks at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday. NBA analyst Jason Timpf was among the many fans captivated by the Fever rookie’s triple-double showing.
Timpf addressed Clark’s critics, who had questioned whether the 22-year-old could live up to the expectations of being the No. 1 overall draft pick. The analyst asserted that the former Iowa standout has quickly emerged as one of the top players in women's basketball.
"When so many players/media were doubting Caitlin before the start of the season, I felt pretty certain that she would be fine," Timpf said in a tweet on X (formerly known as Twitter)
"She is more than fine. She’s already one of the best players in the league. This is crazy," he added.
Clark, who became the first rookie ever in WNBA history to record a triple-double earlier in the season, became only the fifth player ever to record multiple triple-doubles in a single season. Clark joined Candace Parker, Sabrina Ionescu, Courtney Williams and Alyssa Thomas in an elite list.
Clark is the hot favorite to win the Rookie of the Year award after registering a stat line of 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against the Sparks. The Fever rookie shot 8-of-17 from the field, including 4-of-10 from the 3-point range.
Coaches in awe of Caitlin Clark
Apart from Jason Timpf and millions of other basketball fans, the Indiana Fever coach Christie Sides and the Sparks coach Curt Miller hailed Caitlin Clark after her dazzling display.
Coach Sides not only appreciated the rookie's triple-double stat line but also heaped praise on how she created scoring opportunities for her teammates.
“She’s playing really well. She’s shooting the hell out of the ball. And she’s making sure she’s finding those open players. She had some amazing assists tonight. Triple-double. Second one for a rookie. Just really, really proud of her," said Sides after the game.
Coach Miller candidly admitted that the WNBA is lucky to have a player like Clark.
"She's a special player and we're really, really fortunate to have her in our league," the Sparks coach said after the game.
On the back of Clark's exceptional performance, the Fever improved their record to 18-16 on the season.
