The Dallas Wings have reportedly parted ways with Latricia Trammell as their head coach following a 9-31 record that made them the 11th team in the WNBA. Trammell spent two seasons in Dallas.
Reporter Dorothy J. Gentry said that Trammell and Wings COO Amber Cox are leaving the team, with the latter going to Indiana to become the Fever's new general manager.
This news drew mixed reactions from fans, with some saying that Latricia Trammell's departure could mean the beginning of the end of Satou Sabally's tenure with the Wings. Some went further and linked her with the Liberty and the Fever.
"I think this firing gives Satou Sabally a reason to get outta Dallas. . . It’s up to you New York New York," one fan said.
"Welcome to NY, Satou," another fan said.
"Satou Sabally coming Indiana Fever for work with our GM, ex- COO’s Dallas," another fan predicted.
Others criticized the decision, as Trammell joined a list of coaches leaving their teams this offseason.
"I swear it seems like they change coaches every year," one fan said.
Trammell is now the third coach without a team in the 2024 WNBA offseason. Teresa Weatherspoon was dismissed by the Chicago Sky a couple of weeks ago; Stephanie White isn't expected to return to the Connecticut Sun.
Revisiting Latricia Trammell's tenure with the Dallas Wings
Latricia Trammell signed with the Wings ahead of the 2023 WNBA season, making an instant impact on the players. They went from 18-18 in 2022 to 22-18 in 2023 and a spot in the playoffs semifinals. The eventual champions, the Las Vegas Aces, swept them to advance to the Finals.
2024 was a nightmare for this squad, but not everything was on Trammell. Satou Sabally could only make her debut after the Olympic break, and she wasn't the only star who missed time. Natasha Howard missed 13 games, while the up-and-coming Maddy Siegrist was also out for several weeks with an injury.
They struggled to find consistency all season, but none of that should be held against Latricia Trammell. They have interesting pieces, starting with Sabally and All-WNBA Second Team member Arike Ogunbowale. Now, the process to add a general manager and head coach starts, with fans hoping they make the right choices.
