"Told me I’m going to be a great defensive player": Rickea Jackson on Sparks' ex-coach Curt Miller’s advice, rookie year growth, and more (Exclusive)

Rickea Jackson
Rickea Jackson's offence is smooth but her defence is the real game changer.

Rickea Jackson quickly established herself as one of the WNBA’s rising stars in her rookie season. Selected fourth overall by the Los Angeles Sparks in the 2024 WNBA Draft, the former Tennessee Lady Vol quickly became a key piece for the franchise, showcasing her versatility on both ends of the court.

Averaging 13.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while starting 35 of 40 games, Jackson’s presence was a consistent bright spot for a Sparks team that went through plenty of ups and downs, including a season-ending ACL injury for Cameron Brink. Jackson’s growth throughout the season was evident, particularly defensively, which was molded under head coach Curt Miller.

Miller, who mutually agreed to part ways with the Sparks finished with a league-worst 8-32 record, played a crucial role in Jackson’s development, helping her gain confidence and refine her skills on both ends of the court.

Jackson’s strong rookie campaign earned her a spot on the Associated Press WNBA All-Rookie Team, alongside fellow standouts Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, Leonie Fiebich, and Kamilla Cardoso. With her selection, Jackson became the eighth Lady Vol to receive this honor, continuing the rich tradition of Tennessee producing elite WNBA talent.

Looking ahead, Jackson is set to compete in the newly launched Unrivaled, a three-on-three league founded by Napheesa Collier and Breanna Stewart, during the WNBA offseason, providing her with a valuable opportunity to continue her development and not have to play abroad.

In this exclusive interview after the Sparks’ loss against the Indiana Fever late in the regular season, Rickea Jackson opens up about her growth under Curt Miller, her thoughts on her rookie season, and what lies ahead.

Rickea Jackson speaks on her rookie season, playing with Angel Reese, and more

Q: You’ve had an impressive rookie season. What do you feel you’ve improved the most so far?

Rickea Jackson:

“I’d say my confidence and being more active on the defensive end.”

Q: What has helped you improve throughout the year? Has anyone in particular helped you—a veteran teammate or a member of the coaching staff?

Rickea Jackson:

“Honestly, the whole coaching staff has been a huge help. They instill a lot of confidence in me. Coach Curt, in particular, has always told me I’m going to be a great defensive player and has encouraged me to really focus on that.”

Q: What are your top focus areas for your development?

Rickea Jackson:

“I want to be more aggressive from the start. Coach Curt said I’ve earned the attention I’m getting on offense, and I’m a go-to offensive player now, so I expect the extra attention. I just need to stay level-headed and continue being aggressive.

Q: In the WNBA offseason, you will be playing in Unrivaled. Angel Reese mentioned how playing three-on-three basketball could benefit her development. How do you feel three-on-three basketball can help you?

Rickea Jackson:

“I think three-on-three basketball really helps with one-on-one defense. It’s a fast-paced game. I played it with USA Basketball, and it was an amazing experience. It helps you improve your one-on-one skills, and staying close to my family in the U.S. during that time will help too.”

Q: The Sparks have some versatile lineups where you’re playing five-out, showcasing a lot of flexibility. How does that style bring out the best in your skillset?

Rickea Jackson:

“I’m a versatile player, so I try to contribute wherever I’m needed. Whether it’s posting up or playing on the wing, I’m comfortable doing both. Our offense allows me to freelance and adapt to different situations.”

Q: You played at Tennessee, and now you play with the Sparks, like Candace Parker. Is that someone you draw inspiration from in your career?

Rickea Jackson:

“Candace Parker is an all-time great. I grew up watching her, and everything she’s accomplished is amazing. She’s someone I look up to, and following a similar path from Tennessee to the Sparks is something I hope to build on.”

Q: You’ve been one of the standout rookies this season, and your class has been impressive—Angel Reese leading the league in rebounds and Caitlin Clark is the assists leader. What stands out to you about your class?

Rickea Jackson:

“I think what stands out is our fearlessness. Players like Angel and myself are breaking records and making history early in our careers. This rookie class is dynamic, and we’re showing what we’re capable of, even through the ups and downs.”
