WNBA legends Sheryl Swoopes and Nancy Lieberman had a recent falling out due to Caitlin Clark. Lieberman shared the collapse of her friendship with Swoopes, who has been critical of the Indiana Fever star.
Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright reacted to the two women's hoops legends' beef amid Clark's ascent in an episode of "What's Wright? With Nick Wright" published to YouTube on Tuesday.
"I have found some of this to be really unfortunate. I think the whole Sheryl Swoopes thing is not great. Wow all of a sudden, we have a Sheryl Swoopes-Nancy Lieberman beef. These are two of the greatest all-time legends. I don't love that. How much of this has fallen down racial lines is just another, to me you know kind of crack in our social fabric, if you will," Wright said. [14:23 - 14:56]
This 'unfortunate' situation began when Swoopes used false information to discredit Caitlin Clark's record-breaking year with the Iowa Hawkeyes. Swoopes famously appeared on the "Gil's Arena" podcast and claimed that Clark was in her fifth year and was taking at least 40 shots per game.
The information was wrong with Clark being in her fourth year and only averaged 19.9 shots per game in her collegiate career.
Nancy Lieberman shared on "The Stephen A. Smith Show" that she called Swoopes after it happened and tried to keep things from getting too big.
However, Swoopes allegedly got upset and they haven't talked ever since. Lieberman tried to fix things during the Final Four but said the three-time WNBA MVP didn't want to talk to her.
Sheryl Swoopes releases texts between her and Caitlin Clark
Sheryl Swoopes had enough of people telling her that what she said on Gilbert Arenas' podcast was wrong. So Swoopes shared a series of texts between her and Caitlin Clark in February.
In the texts, the WNBA legend admitted her mistake and praised Clark for her record-breaking season.
"Hey, Caitlin. I wanted to personally reach out to you and say I made a mistake on what year this is for you. Covid year had me all confused...Lol! I also have nothing but respect for you and your game and appreciate your skill. Congrats on everything you have accomplished thus far. Be blessed," Swoopes wrote.
The then-Iowa player had no problem with what Swoopes said and accepted her explanation. She even returned the favor and praised the four-time WNBA champion for being a women's basketball pioneer. However, some fans are still upset with the legend for her continued criticism of the 22-year-old rookie.
